Suburbs of Wapiti
Suburbs of Wapiti
Elk, or elch, originally the European word for moose, has been mistakenly used for wapiti. The word “wapiti” dates back in our lexicon to the 19th century First Nations’ word waapiti. Waapiti in turn came from the word wap meaning white, referring to the white tail/rump characteristic of the wapiti. By using the word wapiti, we try to remember the heritage of the First Nation people. The unincorporated community of Wapiti, Wyoming is found in Park County, situated along the North Fork of the Shoshone River in Shoshone National Forest.
