Hoodoos of the Mines
Hoodoos of the Mines
Located on the grasslands of eastern Colorado, the area around the Paint Mines was primarily populated by the Plains Apaches during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Pushed out in the 1700s by the Comanche and Ute tribes, they too were supplanted by the raiding Arapaho and Cheyenne in the 1800’s. Shortly thereafter, Europeans began westward expansion, bringing ranchers and small industry to the area, mining the clay deposits for brickworks in Colorado Springs.
