Another view of the former King Ruprecht’s castle, showing the damage wrought by nature and man. Due to shifting geographic boundaries and religious ideologies, the castle was occupied and abandoned many times during the last 8800 years. Much of the damage was caused by the occupying French, who retreated and destroyed its fortifications during the Nine Years’ War in 1689.
